Dear friends,

I am happy to announce the pending publication of the new book by the BHAAAS Board member Amila Buturovic, entitled

Carved in Stone, Etched in Memory: Death, Tombstones and Commemoration in Bosnian Islam since c.1500

to come out with Ahsgate Publishing in Septeber 2015.

The book traces changes in Bosnia’s religious landscape and analyzes complex cultural shifts and exchange between Christianity and Islam in this area following the advent of the Ottoman rule. It highlights the value of tombstones as texts that not only give important information about the deceased but also inscribe collective and personal memory, record shifts in eschatological sensibilities and assign to the landscape new meaning and value.

The book includes over 80 exquisite original b/w photographs of many little-known gravesites across B-H by Montreal-based photographer Velibor Bozovic.
